BeChinatown Night Market launched in November 2023 in the hopes of helping Chinatown small businesses that were still struggling from the aftermath of COVID-19. The Night Market was a success from the start and now regularly draws 10,000 to 18,000 visitors each month and showcases 40+ local restaurants and merchants, mostly from Chinatown. We also provide unique experiences that attendees cannot find elsewhere, such as Asian-focused games and activities. Beginning in 2025, we will showcase up-and-coming Asian American DJs and performers on stage.
For vendors, many are reporting sales on Night Market nights equivalent to their typical weekly revenue; for some, 3.5 hours at the Night Market was able to cover their rent for the entire month and more. It’s not only the vendors that benefit: restaurants, bars and other merchants in the area see increased business from the additional influx of people to the area, bringing a significant economic boost to not only Chinatown but the entire northeast quadrant of San Francisco. Most attendees are from outside the area; the Night Market is now a destination that people travel to who tend to stay at for 2+ hours, which allows for meaningful engagement with sponsors, vendors, small businesses, nonprofit organizations and other community stakeholders from the area.
The BeChinatown Night Market brings hope of renewal by drawing bustling crowds by the thousands, generating vastly improved revenue for local merchants and restoring San Francisco Chinatown as a premiere nightlife destination.
